Why Is the Mahakumbh Held?
The churning of the ocean, or Samudra Manthan, is a legendary occurring that is important to the Mahakumbh story. Legend has it that as the gods and devils churned the water, it decided to split all the valuables that came to light. The riches split quietly, but an argument arose between the two parties over the nectar of immortality (Amrit).
To safeguard the nectar (Amrit) from the demons, Lord Vishnu passed the jug of Amrit to his vehicle, Garuda. When the demons spotted the nectar on Garuda, they attempted to steal it. During that war, a few drops of Amrit fell on four distinct places on Earth: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik. Currently, this spot holds the Kumbh Mela each year for twelve years.

This Is Why It Is Held Every 12 Years
Based on traditional Hindu mythology, the gods and demons fought in a twelve-day battle for the nectar of immortality (Amrit) while the ocean was churning (Samudra Manthan). These twelve days are equivalent to twelve lifetimes in human terms. As a result, Haridwar, Prayagraj, Ujjain, and Nashik are the four different sites where the Kumbh Mela takes place every twelve years. Also, the time of the Kumbh Mela is affected by the motion of the planet Jupiter (Brihaspati). When Jupiter travels into the sign of Aquarius (Kumbh), it is regarded as being beneficial.
- The Kumbh Mela occurs at Prayagraj when the Sun (Surya) passes into Capricorn (Makar) and the planet Jupiter (Brihaspati) is in Taurus (Vrishabh).
