A devastating fire tore through a hotel building in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area on Wednesday morning, killing at least 21 people and injuring several others in one of the capital’s deadliest fire incidents in recent years.
The blaze broke out at Flourish Stay B&B, a hotel operating above a restaurant in the Hauz Rani area of Malviya Nagar. According to Delhi Police and fire officials, emergency services received information about the fire at around 8:48 a.m., triggering a large-scale rescue operation involving multiple fire engines, police personnel, and local residents.
Fire Spread Rapidly Through the Building
Authorities said the fire engulfed the multi-storey building within minutes, trapping dozens of guests inside. Eyewitness videos circulating online showed thick black smoke billowing from the structure while several people attempted desperate escapes from upper floors.
Local residents reportedly helped rescue trapped occupants by placing mattresses on the road below, allowing some individuals to jump to safety.
More than 40 people were rescued and rushed to nearby hospitals. However, despite extensive rescue efforts, at least 21 people lost their lives.
Many Victims Were Foreign Nationals
Preliminary reports suggest that a significant number of those staying at the hotel were foreign nationals visiting Delhi for medical treatment or accompanying patients admitted to nearby hospitals.
Officials have not yet released the complete list of victims, and identification efforts remain underway.
The area around Malviya Nagar is known for hosting numerous budget accommodations used by medical tourists visiting healthcare facilities in the capital.
PM Modi Announces Compensation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy and announced financial assistance for the affected families.
In a message posted by the Prime Minister’s Office, he described the loss of lives as “tragic” and extended condolences to the families of the victims.
The Prime Minister announced:
- ₹2 lakh ex-gratia from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each deceased victim.
- ₹50,000 assistance for every injured person.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also expressed condolences and assured all possible support to the victims and their families.
Questions Raised Over Safety Violations
Initial investigations have revealed potential violations at the property.
According to sources, the establishment was licensed under a Bed and Breakfast (B&B) category and reportedly had permission for only six rooms. However, authorities believe the property was operating approximately 25 rooms, including accommodations in the basement.
Investigators are also examining reports that the building had only a single entry and exit point, which may have severely hampered evacuation efforts during the fire.
Delhi Police are expected to register a case and investigate whether negligence or safety violations contributed to the high death toll.

Some eyewitness accounts indicate that the fire may have originated near the restaurant area on the ground floor before rapidly spreading upward through the building.
