Srinagar, September 15, 2025 – Jammu and Kashmir achieved a key milestone on Monday as Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha flagged off the first cargo parcel train from the Valley to Delhi. The train, which departed from Nowgam railway station, will provide a cheaper, faster, and more reliable mode of transport for perishable goods such as apples and vegetables.
This service is being seen as a lifeline for Kashmiri farmers, who often face losses due to highway closures and transport delays. Now, with goods reaching Delhi overnight, farmers will have direct access to bigger markets and fairer prices.
Apples – Kashmir’s Economic Backbone
Kashmir is famous for its apples, contributing nearly 75% of India’s total apple production. The fruit industry supports millions of people in the Valley, directly or indirectly. However, due to poor road connectivity, farmers frequently suffer heavy losses.
Most of the produce travels by the Srinagar-Jammu highway, which is often blocked by landslides, rains, or snow. As a result, apples and other perishables spoil before reaching the market.
Fortunately, the new cargo train will now ensure stable, all-weather transport.

At the launch, LG Manoj Sinha underlined the importance of the service:
“Every day, 23 to 24 tonnes of apples and other goods will be sent from here and reach Delhi the very next morning. This will save time, cut costs, and protect farmers’ interests.”
Moreover, rail transport is cheaper than roadways. Therefore, farmers can now reduce expenses, increase profit margins, and compete better in national markets.
Relief From Highway Closures
The Srinagar-Jammu highway is the only major road link between the Valley and the rest of India. Nevertheless, frequent landslides and rains keep it closed for days. Just last month, farmers feared that the bumper apple crop might perish due to long closures.
Now, thanks to the cargo train, such fears will be reduced, as farmers will not have to rely solely on road transport.
