After more than six decades of service, the legendary MiG-21 fighter jet is set to retire from the Indian Air Force (IAF), marking the end of an era in India’s aviation history. The MiG-21 retirement ceremony will be held at the Chandigarh Air Force Station on 26th September 2025, following a spectacular rehearsal earlier this week that celebrated the aircraft’s unmatched legacy.
A Historic Rehearsal Before the MiG-21 Retirement
On 24th September 2025, Chandigarh Air Force Station hosted a full dress rehearsal ahead of the official MiG-21 retirement event. The rehearsal featured breathtaking aerobatic displays by the Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team, a simulated aerial raid by Jaguar aircraft, and a daring skydiving performance by the Akash Ganga team. The MiG-21 jets also received a ceremonial water cannon salute, a tribute to their six decades of distinguished service.

The MiG-21, inducted into the IAF in 1963, has been one of the most significant fighter jets in India’s defense history. From the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars to the 1999 Kargil conflict and the 2019 Balakot airstrikes, the aircraft has been at the forefront of action.
Despite safety concerns in later years that earned it the nickname ‘flying coffin,’ people still recognize the aircraft’s undeniable legacy. As part of the farewell, six MiG-21s from No. 23 Squadron, “Panthers” will take to the skies in a final flypast. Adding to the moment’s significance, Squadron Leader Priya Sharma will fly one of the jets, showcasing the growing contribution of women officers in the IAF.
