The well-known Sher-e-Punjab restaurant in Manali was badly damaged after heavy rains and floods hit Himachal Pradesh. How It Happened
The restaurant was located in Bahang, just a few feet away from the Beas river. On Monday night (August 25), the river rose suddenly after 20,000 cusecs of water were released from the Largi Dam. Heavy rain had already swollen the river, and the strong flow finally reached the restaurant.
Locals said they heard a loud crashing sound around midnight when the water hit the building. Within hours, the whole structure was gone. Chairs, tables, and kitchen equipment were all washed away. By morning, only the front wall and entrance gate remained, standing as a sad reminder of the loss.

The damage to Sher-e-Punjab is part of a much bigger problem in Himachal Pradesh. The state has been facing continuous rain, floods, and landslides for several weeks.

“This is not just the loss of a building, but the loss of a part of Manali’s culture and memory,” said Harvinder Singh, a local guide.
For many tourists, eating at Sher-e-Punjab was a tradition whenever they visited Manali. Generations of families have stopped there for its North Indian food. Now, with its sudden end, both locals and visitors are left in shock.
Wider Destruction Across the State
The floods and landslides have caused widespread destruction across many parts of Himachal Pradesh.
