In a major anti-corruption operation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Harcharan Singh Bhullar, a 2009-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer currently serving as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Ropar Range, Punjab. The officer was taken into custody on charges of bribery and misuse of official power after the agency reportedly caught him accepting illegal gratification through a middleman.
According to official sources, the CBI acted on a complaint filed by a scrap dealer from Fatehgarh Sahib, who alleged that Bhullar had demanded a bribe to help close an FIR registered against him. Acting swiftly, the central agency laid a trap and caught the officer red-handed, leading to his arrest at his office in Chandigarh.
CBI Recovers ₹5 Crore Cash, Gold, and Luxury Assets
Following the arrest, CBI teams carried out extensive searches at Bhullar’s residence, office, and other related premises. During these operations, the agency reportedly recovered over ₹5 crore in cash, 1.5 kilograms of gold jewellery, and several documents linked to high-value real estate properties.
Officials also seized 22 luxury watches, two high-end cars (Audi and Mercedes), and multiple firearms with ammunition. The sheer scale of assets found has raised serious concerns about corruption and illegal wealth accumulation within sections of the state’s police force.
CBI Continues Probe Into Corruption Trail
Sources close to the investigation confirmed that the CBI first took Bhullar to Panchkula, Haryana, for procedural questioning before bringing him back to Chandigarh for further interrogation. A CBI court has now remanded the officer to judicial custody for 14 days.
The CBI is now investigating the origin of the seized cash and properties and whether Bhullar used his position to obtain favors or monetary gains in other cases. Officials said more arrests could follow if evidence links other individuals to the bribery network.
A Major Setback for Punjab Police’s Image
This arrest has caused significant embarrassment for the Punjab Police, known for its efforts to modernize and maintain discipline. The case has once again brought focus to the need for transparency and internal vigilance mechanisms within law enforcement agencies.
Public trust in policing depends heavily on accountability, and cases like this highlight the importance of strict monitoring of officers holding senior ranks. The CBI’s swift action, however, is being seen as a step toward restoring credibility in the system.

Conclusion
The arrest of DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar underscores that no one is above the law, regardless of rank or position. With cash, gold, and luxury goods worth crores recovered, this case could become one of Punjab’s most high-profile corruption investigations in recent years. The outcome of the probe will likely determine not just Bhullar’s fate but also the larger approach to anti-corruption enforcement within India’s police services.
