A massive explosion near the historic Red Fort in Delhi has left nine people dead and over 20 injured, sending shockwaves across the national capital. The explosion occurred at approximately 6:50 PM near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station, involving a slow-moving Hyundai i20. Preliminary reports indicate the vehicle had been parked in the area for over three hours before the blast. Three people were reportedly inside the car at the time of the explosion.
The blast’s intensity was so high that it shattered windows of vehicles parked nearby and set several others on fire. Local residents captured visuals showing plumes of smoke and flames billowing from the cars.
Delhi Fire Services deployed over 20 fire tenders to the site, while the Bomb Disposal Squad, Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) teams, and Delhi Police cordoned off the area. Victims were immediately rushed to LNJP Hospital, with nine confirmed dead and several others in critical condition.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have detained at least one person connected to the vehicle for questioning. Simultaneously, Delhi Police are investigating a terror module allegedly linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind (AGuH). Earlier on Monday, security forces recovered 2,900 kg of explosives in a separate operation, hours before the Red Fort blast.
Delhi Police Commissioner Satender Kumar Gupta said that the police are pursuing all leads and verifying the car’s ownership trail through the Regional Transport Office (RTO).The Hyundai i20, bearing a Haryana registration plate, had reportedly changed hands multiple times.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the hospital to meet the injured and assured citizens that investigators are exploring all possible angles of the incident.Teams from the Delhi Crime Branch, Special Branch, NSG, NIA, and FSL are conducting a detailed investigation. CCTV footage from nearby areas is being examined, and all options are being considered,” Shah said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences for the victims and is closely monitoring the investigation alongside Amit Shah. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also visited hospitals to meet the injured and coordinated with medical and police teams to provide all necessary assistance.
Authorities in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra raised the alert level after the incident, and security agencies are conducting intensive checks and maintaining vigilance at major transport hubs.

Medical authorities have urged citizens to donate blood to assist the victims. Dr. Rohan Krishnan, Chief Patron of the Federation of All India Medical Associations, appealed for urgent donations, emphasizing the critical situation of several injured patients.
The Chandni Chowk Traders Association announced a temporary closure of the market for Tuesday as a safety precaution. Residents have been advised to stay calm, avoid spreading rumors, and rely only on official updates from authorities.
